Day of Atonement or What Would Lieberman Do?

The sun has now set in the east, and Yom Kippur is over. For my gentile friends, Yom Kippur is the day of atonement; the one day set aside each year to consider our deeds of the year just passed, to reflect on the wrongs we may have done, and to try to make up for them.

The way observant Jews atone is by fasting and spending the day praying at temple. As for me, I tend to do everything differently.

I don't fast, nor do I go to temple. And I don't pray. But I always try to treat others the way I'd like to be treated. I don't always behave with the best of intentions, but when I do something wrong, and treat others badly, I'm pretty tough on myself. I guess it's the old Jewish guilt. It gets me every time.

I wonder what Joe Lieberman is feeling today. He claims to be an orthodox Jew. Obviously, he took part in the traditions of fasting and observing the day of atonement. I wonder if he feels badly about being against a public option, about his efforts to create laws that will continue to deny millions of Americans quality, affordable health care.

It's no different, really, than those Christians who can claim to be followers of Christ who similarly vote against the interests and well-being of their fellow Americans.

I don't claim to be religious, yet I know I have more compassion for my fellow humans than these so-called believers do. And they invoke the name of God, for God's sake!

Tonight on Air America, I'll speak with Bing Perrine, the subject of the latest ad from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America, under the heading of HealthCareCantWait.com:

I'll also speak with Adam Green, co-founder of the PCCC to get some background on how this campaign is going.

We'll get a few updates on some stories we covered last week, too...

The G20 Summit wrapped up on Friday, and I still have questions about what they did, or didn't do. Tonight, we'll speak with Todd Tucker, research director for the Global Trade Watch division of Public Citizen, who'll attempt to explain to me the outcome of the summit.

And I'll check in with Dennis McMahon, attorney for the NYC Coalition for Answers Now (NYCCAN.org) to hear the latest in their quest for a new investigation into what happened on 9/11.

Listen live from 11pm-1am tonight by clicking here, call in live at 866-303-2270, and join in the live chat here....

Our whole culture, economic system, education system, political system, and mainstream religions support our self-centered, me-first, I got mine - you get yours, system of greed. Our only hope is to keep fighting for ''Compassionsim'' -- win or lose.

Keep up the good work.
