Welcome to Earth Day 2009. Unfortunately, I'm a bit under the weather today. So, in lieu of a new Radio or Not podcast, I thought I'd give you a musical reminder of what earth day is about.
First up, a band that I grew to love back around 1994 when their debut, self-titled album was released. It contained this song, If You Love Me Why Am I Dying? that is written on behalf of our planet...
I believe it was a few years earlier that the Los Angeles based band, Dramarama got sucked up into the excitement of Earth Day. There were big concerts and events happening all over the country on April 21, which happened to be a Sunday, so that's when the celebrations were scheduled.
John Easedale, who wrote What Are We Gonna Do? mistook that fact that the events were happening on the 21st for the actual date of Earth Day, which he later learned was really April 22. But the song lives on....
And, of course, there is the grandfather of Earth Day songs, from the one and only Marvin Gaye... written long before Earth Day was a day to celebrate and cherish and plan for the future of our planet...
Happy Earth Day from Radio or Not!
